Search engine optimisation for non-techies

This fact sheet is designed to provide guidance on some of the basic but fundamental elements of Search Engine Optimisation and is not intended to be a comprehensive guide.

Introduction

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is about ensuring that potential clients find your website quickly and easily via search engines such as Google, MSN, Yahoo, etc.

Basic SEO involves:

  • understanding what key words or phrases potential clients would use to find your website;
  • ensuring these key words or phrases form an important and relevant part of your website;
  • ensuring that search engines recognise the importance and relevance of these key words and phrases to your website; and
  • ensuring that search engines recognise that your site is well connected, up to date and organically growing.

SEO is ethical and search engines are in favour of it when implemented correctly as it helps to provide accurate search results.

1.
Key Words or Phrases

Key words or phrases are the terms which people enter in to a search engine to find a website.
When deciding on your key words do not focus on single words.  Someone in
Birmingham looking for a solicitor won’t just search on the key word “solicitor”.   Focus on key phrases.

“solicitor
Birmingham” or “commercial property solicitor Birmingham"

Do not cram each web page with as many key words or phrases which you can think of.  For each web page decide on two key phrases which people are likely to use when looking for the product or service promoted on that page.

Home page key words for the above example could include: “Solicitor
Birmingham” and “Lawyer Birmingham"

The Commercial Property Service page example could include: “Commercial Property Solicitor
Birmingham” and “Dilapidations Solicitor Birmingham

2.
Page Titles

Page titles appear at the top of the browser and in the browser tag (depending on which version and type of web browser you are using) and it is the first and arguably the most important thing a search engine indexes from your website/page.  It is also the bold and underlined blue text which appears in the top line in the results page of a search engine.

Most websites either use it for the name of the page i.e. “Home” and or the company name.  This is a big mistake. Each page title needs to be relevant to your key phrase (i.e. what you are promoting on that page) your location and company name.  Each page title should be set out in specific way.

Most search engines don’t like page titles to be more than 10 to 12 words.

3.
Page Description

The page description is the text displayed in a search engine under the Page Title.  This text should be unique to each page and include your key phrase and a call to action

4.
Page Content

Aim to start the body text of each page with a heading (H1), which should be your key phrase.

When writing the main body text aim to include your key phrase near the top of your body text and once again near the bottom of your body text.

5.
Summary: Page Title, Page Description, Page Content,

When indexing your website against a particular key phrase, a search engine will read the Page Title, then the Page Description, then the Heading within the main Copy and then the Copy itself.  The more relevant the search term is within all of these elements the higher a search engine will rank your website.

Remember: Write your website with a unique and relevant key phrase for each page.

Include that key phrase in each “Page Title”, “Page Description” and “Page Content”

All page content should have a H1 heading which includes the key phrase.  The main body text should include the key phrase twice, once near the top of the body text and once near the bottom.

6.
Other Considerations

New content:
The more new content you add to your site the more times Google will return to index your site.  Growth needs to be gradual and there is a magic 100 page mark which is when search engines take the site more seriously.

Flash Pages:
If you have a flash animation landing page, get rid of it as search engines can’t read it and people find them annoying and generally use the ‘skip intro’ button.

Links:
Ensure each page has a logical and progressive link to the next page so the search engine can easily navigate through the site and index each page.  (This is also very helpful for human readers too!). Search engines do not like broken links so make sure they all work.

If you have a links page where you link to other sites, keep the number of links to below 50 and ensure you only link to sites that are related to your business.
The more external links a search engine finds back to your site the better.  One-way links are weighted higher than two-way links. i.e. links from websites that you do not link back to your website are weighted higher than reciprocal links.
When asking a website to link to you, instruct them to use a relevant key phrase “
Commercial Property Solicitor Birmingham”

The HTML code looks like this:

<a href=”http://www.abcsolicitors.co.uk”>Commercial Property Solicitor
Birmingham</a>

Website Map:
Search engines love them, if you haven’t got one, get one.

Don’t Try and Fool a Search Engine:
Pages crammed full of key words, white text, linking to any website via a link exchange programme, etc. None of this works and the only thing I can guarantee is that is will get your website dropped down the listings or even barred from search engines.

7.
Conclusion

Your website should be primarily written with your target market in mind and secondly for search engines.   Readers have to understand, be interested and moved to take action from your website.
